About
"When I got to MTV in 1988 it was a wonderful period. Everything was booming so you could do all this stuff and there were no rules about what this operation should be like. You made it up as you went along. There was no end to what you could do. I heard an executive once, somebody told him that MTV was stupid and he said, 'Yes we are.' It was a ton of fun."
In his two-hour interview, Kurt Loder talks about his early life and influences and the kind of music he listened to growing up. He describes his early association with Rolling Stone magazine which led to him collaborating with Tina Turner on her autobiography I, Tina. He recalls the early days of MTV when Michael Jackson and Madonna exploded on the scene, and tells of early MTV events such as Live Aid. He discusses being tapped by MTV to join their news department, where he acted as interviewer, correspondent, and host of the weekly music news show The Week in Rock. Loder outlines his involvement with the MTV Music Video Awards and such famous incidents as the Madonna and Courtney Love interview, and various other controversial moments. He details MTV's evolution from a music video channel to a channel of mostly original programming, and the effect the Internet has had on the music industry in general. He concludes by discussing his work as a panelist on Fox News' Red Eye, and commenting on where he sees MTV and the music industry going in the future. Bonnie Datt conducted the interview on October 13, 2013 in New York, NY.
