About
About this interview

In his two-hour interview, Alton Brown talks about his early love of being in the kitchen and his early interest in science. He describes how he came to major in theater, discusses his fascination with directing, and recounts his early work in production -- doing camera work for commercials and music videos (including R.E.M.'s "The One I Love"). He speaks of the genesis of the idea for his cooking show, Good Eats, of attending culinary school in his 30s, and of originally not wanting to host Good Eats. Brown details how the show aired on a PBS station in Chicago before getting picked up by the Food Network, and discusses the intricacies of researching show ideas, writing scripts, directing, and creating characters for the program. He explains how he was approached to begin hosting Iron Chef America, and outlines his preparations for the show. He also comments on hosting Feasting on Asphalt and Feasting on Waves, and on serving as a mentor on The Next Food Network Star. He describes his production company, Be Square, his wife's role in the company, and the appearances family members have made on his programs. Amy Harrington conducted the interview on May 22, 2012 in North Hollywood, CA.

"There are people that want to be good. There are people that want to be original. A lot of people want to be both. I wanted to be original more than I wanted to be good. I wanted to do something that hadn't been done before. Above all, I really wanted that."
