Search Tips

This site has replaced our old site at emmytvlegends.org. We hope you like it! The majority of our interviews are available for viewing online. This site has been designed to expedite searches by cataloging hours of interviews and tagging them by personal name, show title, topic, profession, etc. Here are some examples of how to search.

 

GENERAL SEARCH:

NEW for this site! You can now search by "clips"-- which will take you to the exact timecode in the interview for the search phrase you typed in. When you click on search, you can enter a free-text field of anything (name, show, topic, phrase) and either search the site generally, or choose "Search Clips" to see results play on the search-return page. Check out SEARCH CLIPS and try it out!

INTERVIEWS:

If you are looking to watch an interview with a specific person, such as Mary Tyler Moore, simply click on "ALL INTERVIEWS" and scroll to the bottom to see an alphabetical list of all interviewees. You can then scroll to "M" or click the "M" in the navigation to jump around. Then click on the name "Mary Tyler Moore." Of course, you can always use the search button at the top of any page, and type her name. See our full list of interviewees here.

Once on Mary's page, you can watch the entire interview by clicking the tab called "FULL INTERVIEW." You can also watch clips curated by our staff from her interview, by clicking on "HIGHLIGHTS". Or, if you just want to see what she has to say about The Dick Van Dyke Show, for example, you could click on the "SHOWS" tab, scroll to Dick Van Dyke Show, The and watch all Mary's sound bites about that show. If you want to hear about her take on the classic "Chuckles the Clown" episode of The Mary Tyler Moore Show, click on "TOPICS" and scroll to "CLASSIC TV SERIES EPISODES." If you want to watch Mary talk about her comedy icon (and landlady, at Desilu) Lucille Ball, click on "PEOPLE" tab and scroll down to Lucille Ball to see everyone else who discussed Lucy.

SHOWS:

If you are looking for interviewees discusssing a particular show, such as All in the Family you can click here to see a list of all shows, or you can click on the search button at the top of any page and type in any show you are interested in. Or you can always start by clicking "ALL INTERVIEWS" and then "SHOWS," then scroll to the bottom of the page for an alphabetical list of all shows discussed by our interviewees. Once on the All in the Family page, you can click on "WHO TALKED ABOUT THIS SHOW" to see all the sound bites from interviewees who discussed that show, from Lee Adams and Charles Strouse (who composed "Those Were the Days", the show's title song) to Bud Yorkin (Co-Producer of the show with his partner Norman Lear).

TOPICS:

If you are looking for information about a topic, such as an historical event or a social issue (e.g: Diversity on Television, the Hollywood Blacklist, etc.), you can click here for a list of all of our topics tagged in interviews. Or you can always start by clicking "ALL INTERVIEWS" and then "TOPICS" and scroll to the bottom of the page for a full list of topics discussed by our interviewees. Once on a specific topic page, you can click on "WHO TALKED ABOUT THIS TOPIC" to see all the sound bites from interviewees who discussed it.

PROFESSIONS:

If you are looking for information on a specific television industry profession, you can click here for a list of all of our professions tagged in our interviews, or you can click on the search button at the top of any page and type in any profession you are interested in. Or you can always start by clicking "ALL INTERVIEWS" and then PROFESSIONS" and scroll to the bottom of the page for a full list of professions discussed by our interviewees, such as "Writers". Once on a specific profession page, you can click on "WHO TALKED ABOUT THIS PROFESSION" to see all the sound bites from interviewees who discussed the profession of Writing (from Alan Alda to Terence Winter!)
