The Sex and the City Finale: Go Big and Go Home
Carrie has now been with Big for ten years. Ten years! Yep, it's been a full decade since Sex and the City aired its final episode, "An American Girl in Paris (Part Deux)", on February 22, 2004. The characters we loved all had nice tie-ups for their storylines in the finale: Samantha is cancer free and embracing a serious relationship with Smith. Charlotte and Harry are adopting a little girl from China. Miranda shows her softer side and cares for her ailing mother-in-law. And last, but certainly not least, Carrie leaves Paris to return to her beloved New York with her beloved Big.
Here it is, the sequence we all waited six seasons to see:
And remember that dress, Carrie's gorgeous purple gown that she falls asleep in while waiting for Aleksandr earlier in the episode? It's practically a character in itself. Costume designer Patricia Field tells us the backstory of that Versace vision:
Even after each main character has a tidy bow fastened upon her storyline, there's still one last gift that we get at the very end of the episode. We FINALLY learn Big's real name! Showrunner Michael Patrick King shares his process for writing the Big reveal:
We've revisited Carrie and the gang in two feature films since the series ended, and Michael Patrick King stated in a recent Entertainment Weekly article that he and Sarah Jessica Parker believe that a third movie may be a possibility because there's a "final chapter" yet to tell. So although we thought we said, "au revoir" to Sex and the City back in 2004, in retrospect it was really more of an, "à bientôt."
