About
"I hated sitting and waiting for the next green light for a film to start. So I would find a TV project to do. And back in the day...if you were a film director, you just didn’t go do TV. That was beneath you. And I thought that was the stupidest idea. I said, 'You mean there are millions of people that television reaches, and you’re too good to do that? No, I’m not buying that.'"
In his four-and-a-half-hour interview, Michael Schultz talks about growing up in Milwaukee, WI and studying theater at Marquette University. He describes moving to New York City and how he came to direct for theater, eventually directing Al Pacino on Broadway – and how that led to his first opportunity to direct for television: the PBS TV movie To Be Young, Gifted and Black. Schultz then discusses his move to Hollywood, directing an episode of the short-lived series Roll Out! and coming under contract for Universal Television, where he directed episodes of The Rockford Files, Baretta, and more. He touches on his film career, including his work with Richard Pryor and his knack for discovering talent, notably casting Denzel Washington, Blair Underwood, and Samuel L. Jackson in their first film roles. He then discusses several TV movies he directed: Earth, Wind & Fire in Concert, "For Us the Living: The Medgar Evers Story" for American Playhouse, and Timestalkers, and his work on The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, including shooting on the day of the 1994 Northridge earthquake. Schultz then goes into his repeated work with various show creators and producers, including David E. Kelley (Picket Fences, The Practice, Ally McBeal), Greg Berlanti (Everwood, Jack & Bobby, Dirty Sexy Money, Brothers & Sisters), and Nkechi Okoro Carroll (All American, All American: Homecoming, Found). He concludes by mentioning some of the comedy series he has worked on (Black-ish and New Girl), sharing his thoughts on the impact of streaming on the television industry, and giving advice to aspiring directors. Adrienne Faillace conducted the interview on April 9, 2026 in North Hollywood, CA.
